The Far Sound – “Further Exploration”
On June 2nd, Centripetal Force Records will release the debut self-titled album from The Far Sound, the solo project of multi-instrumentalist Rick Pedrosa (Abronia, Federale)
A high lonesome meets Appalachia droning in every sense, zyls replete, a measured, raw drum-skin-filled reminiscent of Nathan Bowles meets The Howard Hughes Suite, totally out there and otherwordly and landing perfectly in Petal Motel world. The entire album is cinematic, enigmatic, and hypnotic. Although pedal steel takes center stage, as it often does, intoxicating synthesizers, luminescent banjo, and percussion weave a fine tapestry of sound, culminating in something completely unique and exotic- yet heimlich and familiar.
“Further Exploration” is like Italian film composer Piero Umiliani and David Crosby’s “Laughing” coming together as one. The song started off as a banjo tune and quickly fell together. I recorded it right away, adding some overdubs over the next couple days. After some minimalist banjo I went with big drum drama over the top of a drone I created with a bowed dobro. The song then breaks into the slow chugging jam with a strummed open-tuned 12 string that lays the base for some extended stretches of organ and pedal steel.
