Songs of the Year : 2019

Spotify’s Wrapped feature delivered today, and although I obviously recognize the irony that I’m about to use their service to self-promote my vain tastes, it’s become increasingly clear that it’s a necessary (emphasis on) evil in the streaming age.

I try to support artists by going to shows, buying merch, buying vinyl directly and using Bandcamp. Plus, you know, starting this website in hopes that my niche and small readership will discover something new they like and go out and support musicians similarly. I have a fantasy about one day inventing some API that connects to Spotify and allows you to tip artists, cam-site-style. At the very least, it’s an effective promotional tool.

Last year, I lost all my previous years’ data from Spotify because I had to start a new account because you can’t share a family account with people who don’t live at your address or something. And between my analog spins, use of alternative platforms, and my terrible sleeping habits, this year, my top song was “White Noise for Baby Sleep.” So, here’s my real 2019 wrapped, featuring my most-listened and absolute favorite songs released this year in no particular order. I will say, though – Rounder by Cass McCombs, Mandy from Mohawk by Fruit Bats, and Let it Burn by GospelbeacH are way way way up there. I’ll let the songs speak for themselves.
