Nico Hedley & Field Guides – Worldly & The City is a Painting : Listen

Brooklyn friends Nico Hedley and Field Guides have announced the release of a split 7″ out February 14th on Whatever’s Clever, featuring Hedley’s song, “Worldly,” and Field Guides’s “The City is a Painting.” Check out the video for the songs here.

Hedley and Kupstas have both perfected a wistfulness and a subtle melancholy. The songs complement each other and flow together seamlessly. Like fellow NYC-based musicians Yo La Tengo and labelmate Adeline Hotel, their musicianship is thoughtful, to-the-point, and balanced, with lyric-driven gems of songs that resonant basslines and pedal steel and piano, respectively, serve to emphasize.

After nearly a year in lockdown, “Worldly” and “The City Is A Painting” touch on watching the world continue to unfurl into new uncertainties. The artists recorded the songs together in Hedley’s home studio. Hedley played all the instruments on “Worldly,” and joined in to harmonize on “The City Is a Painting.” Songwriter/producer Katie Von Schleicher added that gorgeous piano part to the latter and expertly mixed both tracks.

The two songs are indeed ships passing, a message to the missed coterie of fellow artists and collaborators that Hedley and Kupstas are missing in this continuously prolonged period of isolation, represented in bits and pieces those very friends submitted to create a community patchwork for the accompanying visual for the songs. We are alone together, indeed.

You can pre-order Worldly & The City is a Painting on either artist’s Bandcamp. There are 200 total hand-numbered copies, 100 on each artist’s profiles. The first 100 copies (50 on either artist’s Bandamp pages) come in Risographed sleeves designed by Kupstas, so get in line! This is a Bandcamp exclusive.
