Jeff Mix and The Songhearts’ “Speed of The Sound of Loneliness” from upcoming John Prine tribute, Kiss My Ass Goodbye

Nashville label Devil’s Tower Records and Portland’s Groove Family Records have announced a limited vinyl release of Kiss My Ass Goodbye, an official Record Store Day release (7/17) featuring legendary and emerging artists from Nashville, Las Vegas, Athens, Seattle, Chicago and beyond paying tribute to everyone’s favorite songwriter. Proceeds benefit the Nashville Rescue Mission.

On Friday, the first single from the compilation was released, Jeff Mix and the Songhearts’ “Speed of the Sound of Loneliness.”

“I tried to imagine, ‘What if The Killers were to do a John Prine song?’

The track listing includes Nashville A-listers who have worked with Prine, such as producer, songwriter and Emmylou Harris/Rodney Crowell guitarist Will Kimbrough (in a collaboration with GRAMMY-nominated singer/songwriter Garrison Starr), as well as underground rock ‘n’ roll heroes like T. Hardy Morris (Diamond Rugs, Dead Confederate). In the case of a track recorded by nascent Nashville indie act Heaven Honey — recently named the Nashville Scene’s “Best New Band” — you have a dreamy collaboration between Heaven Honey’s Jordan Victoria, and an all-star band anchored by legendary drummer Bryan Owings (John Prine, Emmylou Harris, Tony Joe White).

“This album is not an attempt to tell anyone anything they didn’t already know about John Prine,” said Devil’s Tower Records’ Jack Evan Johnson. “If anything, it’s an attempt to say what we all would like to say to John Prine given another chance, which is simply, ‘Thank you.’”

Only 1,000 copies of the double album will be released, and no digital released is planned so pre-order the vinyl now.

Cool side note – the vinyl was mastered by Pete Lyman, who also won a Grammy for mastering John Prine’s final album, Tree of Forgiveness.

Is there any way to tell if the copy purchased is one of the “random colored vinyl” versions before opening it?
