Gunn-Truscinski Duo – For Eddie Hazel : Listen
Long time collaborators Steve Gunn and John Truscinski are releasing their glorious sonic masterpiece, Soundkeeper, on Friday, October 9th. Following the first single, “Valley Spiral,” here’s a taste of what’s to come.
On this single, Gunn says:
For the Duo, our collaboration over the years has been inspired by extensive discussion of albums and musicians we love and admire. The tone and feel of Eddie Hazel’s guitar playing has always been a particular talking point, especially Hazel’s open playing and inventive use of the echoplex on the album ‘Maggot Brain’. Because we’ve listened and talked about him so much, we figured it was time to dedicate something in his honor.
Aside from just being a rabid fan of literally whatever sounds that come out of these guys, I love reading interviews and liner notes because they are true musicians’ musicians – I always learn so much about under-the-radar great artists, or hear amazing tunes (back at the beginning of the pandemic, I was completely enchanted by the mixes Steve was putting on Mixcloud, discovering Vernon Wray and Kak were some real highlights).
Anyway, this album is so good. I could listen to these guys play the phonebook. I’m just glad you can’t hear my screams on the two live tracks on the album, recorded at Union Pool last year. Kidding – the Gunn-Truscinski Duo renders their audience speechless, nevermind screaming. Recommend headphones, a bike ride along East River Parkway, get lost in it.
Pre-order the album here.
Soundkeeper is the first of a series celebrating Three Lobed Recordings’ 20th anniversary. Other amazing releases to come from this fantastic label.
