Greg Loiacono – Mystic Traces

Whatever project Greg Loiacono’s involved with sounds quintessentially Californian. Mystic Traces is no different. Loungey and open with a laid-back sound, the album cruises and coasts like a drive down the 1. It’s easy listening in the best and truest sense of the phrase.

Between his work with the Mother Hips, the Green Leaf Rustlers, and collaborating with countless other Bay Area musicians, it’s no wonder this album sounds so effortlessly cool. Mystic Traces nods to various genres, from bossa nova to country rock. Recorded in Ojai at Scott Hirsch’s (Hiss Golden Messenger) studio with friends like Kyle Field, Bary Sless, Jason Crosby, Neal Casal, and others, the album gets better with each listen.

Side A opens with the groovy “Shoot the Messenger,” while the more wistful, contemplative tracks like “Animal Clouds,” and “Seen You Good,” ask “Do you believe in love?”, Casal’s voice quietly echoing in the background. The harmonies on “Into the Light of Another Day” are unmistakeably reminiscent of The Beatles’ “Because,” and not the last similarity you’ll hear throughout the record.

The eponymous “Mystic Traces” opens the more swinging, boisterous side B. A funky, bluesy guitar makes this the standout track shine. Loiacono’s lyrical strengths are made apparent on “Arms of the Sleeping Lady,” a scenic, autobiographical rambler about a musician’s wanderings and subsequent homecoming.

Can’t not acknowledge the trademark subtle but distinguished, gorgeous guitar tones ringing through “Chamberlain’s Trunk,” offered by our departed friend Neal again. “Close Your Eyes (We’ll Be There Soon)” is a crooning love song to both a passenger and the coast itself, the track that I think encompasses Loiacono’s overall vibe as a musician.

The closing track, “You are Not Alone” brings the album full circle with more Beatles-esque harmonies and swirling guitar. Like a fine North coast Chardonnay, this album’s complexities are unveiled with time. Each listen reveals a note, a clever witticism, or a feeling that may have gone previously undetected. Listen, let it breathe, swirl, and enjoy often.
