Evolfo – “Drying Out Your Eyes” (Live Performance)

Sharing a live performance of the Brooklyn-based Evolfo’s “Drying Out Your Eye” days before their album Site Out of Mind drops (June 18th on Royal Potato Family.)

Equally jazzy as it is acid-drenched, the 7-piece band set out to ascend from their previous release, the acclaimed 2017 Last of the Acid Cowboys, aiming for the ontological on Site Out of Mind. Inspired by science fiction, psychedelic field trips, and recorded in guitarist and vocalist Matt Gibbs’s Ditmas Park apartment where an exorcism took place years earlier and unexplainable phenomena regularly occurs, Site is reminiscent of Tame Impala meets Meat Puppets, with tight technique, a thorough and hearty interest in production, and a classical understanding of each of the members’ instruments.

I never want to say I know for sure, but I believe ‘Drying Out Your Eyes’ is a song about the benefits of talking about your issues rather than stewing on them. It is one of the tracks we kind of made up as we went along in the studio, the ending is entirely improvised. Classic situation where the groove felt so good that we wanted to play it forever and ever. In the studio version, you can even hear us all laughing when our drummer Dave drops his sticks after we finally stopped.

We dreamed up this live video with our super talented video producer buddy Matty Poisson from Arcadian Vision Sound. We told him all about how we felt like no one’s really gotten a good sounding/looking video of us yet and he suggested we shoot from within our own studio where we could dial the sounds and get comfortable. The mood was awesome, it was all dark and smokey and there’s a definite special feel in the room. I think it was a very good call to do it from the studio we all built together. It’s the space where we create together all the time. We had fun, look relaxed, and I feel the sound is amazing.
