Dan Horne – Poor Moon : Listen
Dan Horne has announced a solo record! Yes, that Dan Horne- are credits necessary? Happy to list ’em anyway: producer/engineer extraordinaire of very very favorite records like Tip of the Sphere by Cass McCombs, From Liberty Street by Mapache, and High Upon The Mountain by Pacific Range; he’s played various instruments on favorites like The Tarnished Gold by Beachwood Sparks and Rare Birds by Jonathan Wilson; toured with McCombs and Jonathan Wilson; and last but surely not least, is a founding member of at least three favorite bands of mine – The Skiffle Players, Grateful Shred, and of course, Circles Around the Sun. He plays every instrument on this album, and now his vocals are ready to take center stage.
The first single from The Motorcycle Song EP premiered on Shindig! Magazine’s website today.
The 4-track EP will be exclusively available on Bandcamp on October 2nd (which is a Bandcamp Friday!) until it hits streaming platforms November 20th.
Horne says of his cover of Canned Heat’s tune “Poor Moon”:
“I’ve always felt a connection to Canned Heat, maybe because of the California roots, but I think Sam Blasucci first played me this rather obscure gem on a long drive during a Grateful Shred tour to somewhere. I tracked all the instruments alone quarantined in my studio, but when it became apparent that I needed to add electric sitar, I asked Jonathan Wilson to borrow one of his.
“‘Poor Moon’ felt like an appropriate song for the times. It’s totally absurd, but also relevant in portraying our current sense existential dread. And I thought it would be fun for me to sing to sing all of those doo-wop backing vocals.”
