Cancion Franklin – Just Made Rent
My favorite NYC blues-rocker is back with a new single, “Just Made Rent,” a song for everyone who has:
A) Just made rent
B) Drinks too much
C) Is in a little bit of debt
D) All of the above
Option B is how I came across Cancion’s music. Up until the pandemic, he had a monthly residency at 11th Street Bar, the best pub in New York City, where he electrified audiences with his energetic, animated stage presence and his deep grooves. Originally from the Southwest, it’s rare to find a fellow New Yorker adorned in turquoise rings and a cowboy hat. So glad I did.
Now I’ve had to work most days in my life and my shower takes around 20 minutes to get hot, I’ve got mice and roaches and a bad smoking habit too. I couldn’t hack it in college and I get older every year still slinging drinks but you know what makes that okay with me before you and before God? I can write a song and I know exactly what the average person like us is going through. In that way most of life’s tribulations have been turned into a privilege through my guitar. If great success comes to my door I’m already too old to forget what it’s like to drink too much, just make rent, and be in a little bit of debt.
