Cameron Knowler announces Places of Consequence, premieres “Puerto Suelo”

Petal Motel is so excited to announce the release of Cameron Knowler’s upcoming solo album, Places of Consequence. The album will be out on American Dreams on July 16th (>>Pre-order here!<<). Knowler’s musical vision is strongly tied to location, and the album acts as a transportive vessel, exploring the intersection of place and sound.

On the heels of the highly acclaimed album with Eli Winter, Anticipation, and following two previous full-length solo releases, Cameron’s latest album retains his deliberate, thoughtful playing style, yet as you can hear in “Puerto Suelo,” a certain enigmatic element is present, a desolate, intriguing echo that’s less plucky and more interested in cultivating a mysterious moodiness.

Cameron is a sophisticated musician, an “old soul” if such a thing exists, with a keen sensibility and appreciation for tradition, yet the youth and foresight to adapt and reimagine. In an interesting poetic parallel, as Cameron’s album begins to take flight, he’s journeying across the Southwest to relocate from Houston to Los Angeles to further investigate his interest in musical ethnography, or less scientifically, how when you hear something, it can transport you to a place.

“Puerto Suelo” is an original composition meant to straddle the divide between a pastoral guitar arrangement in the vein of George Cromarty and a western noir soundscape. The track was recorded with a pair of specific guitars in mind: a 1939 Supertone all-birch parlor guitar and a late ’60s Teisco “tulip” model, each panned 30% on either side. As opposed to playing discernable lead and rhythm parts, each guitar mimics the other, creating a charged, heterophonic dialogue. Consistent with this mode of experimentalism, the use of kitchen utensils and banjo percussion are employed to punctuate the song’s narrative departures and returns.
